Summary0001602: OpenMPT hangs when opening the program when a new update is released
Description

When attempting to open OpenMPT when a new update is released, the program window will not show up and show only the update available balloon at the upper left-hand corner of the screen. When attempting to click the balloon, OpenMPT hangs and becomes unresponsive, and quits unexpectedly.

This usually happens at random when a new update for OpenMPT is released.

I am honestly a bit lost here how that could happen.

If that happens, how do you usually resolve the situation to get a working OpenMPT again? Does it work the next time you start it? Do you take that as a hint to update and just update to the latest version?

The situation can be resolved if the player updates by downloading the latest version through the website and installs it. If the user doesn't upgrade and they try opening the program again after quitting from it hanging, the issue will just pop right back up.

Does a manual update check work for you? We can test that the following way:

  1. Disable automatic update check at startup: See https://wiki.openmpt.org/Manual:_Setup/Update, set Automatically check on program start to never.
  2. Downgrade to a previous OpenMPT version.
  3. Click Check now ... in https://wiki.openmpt.org/Manual:_Setup/Update.
