OpenMPT doesn't care about how loud or quiet your samples are. I experience no crashes or freezes at all when loading samples here, not even with the example you have supplied.

If it really crashes, please upload the crash dump of this crash. OpenMPT will tell you where to find the crash dump when crashing (unless it actually didn't crash).

Also, if this keeps happening constantly for you, not only with a specific sample. If it happens after not having played any sound in OpenMPT after a while, it might be related to 0000161, in which case you may want to switch from DirectSound to WaveOut or ASIO in OpenMPT's Soundcard setup. Please tell if doing so fixes the problem (instead of not responding anymore like with some of your other reports) so I can properly add relationships between the issues and close this one.

I'm mostly talking about your issues on the forum where you almost never confirm whether a solution is working (just complaining if it doesn't).
Anyway, this doesn't help with this issue either, so please do as advised in my previous two comments.

all I have is 'primary sound driver' & 'SPDIF out' in the Soundcard setup

There should also be at least one blue-yellow icon (DirectSound) and a yellow speaker icon (WaveOut) - if there's no WaveOut icon, something must be seriously wrong with your system (Windows should always provide a WaveOut driver). Try the first item with a speaker icon and see if it's any better.

I have a 'wave mapper' but not a 'wave out'

...WaveOut is the driver type - every entry with a yellow speaker icon is a WaveOut driver. Wave Mapper has a yellow speaker icon, so it is a WaveOut driver. Use it.

Ok, again...
Blue-Yellow: DirectSound. That's what you've been using before and which is probably causing the crashes.
Yellow Speaker: WaveOut. That's what you are supposed to switch to and see if it doesn't crash anymore.

I played the sample 20 times with no crashes... this must be a 'DirectSound' bug???

Yes. I'm going to close this then as it is related to 0000161. If I can make any progress on fixing this issue, I will post in that other issue, to keep things centralised.
