Summary0000454: some VSTI from Applied Acoustics crash with 1.20.01+
Description

Applied Acoustics' VSTIs

  • Strum Acoustic GS-1
  • Strum Electric GS-1
    crash immediately when they are selected.
    They still worked with OMPT19.04.00, but not with 1.20.01 (and all versions above) anymore.
    I tested it on two different systems, also with the current testversion (btw. which couldnt be started on one of the systems - if there is an interest, I can provide a crashlog for that problem).

Please provide a crash dump as generated by the latest stable version (1.22.07.00), this is going to be more helpful than Windows' limited error reporting. From what I can see, it seems to have something to do with Data Execution Prevention (due to the "BEX" event), but OpenMPT is not configured to use DEP. Does this still work with OpenMPT 1.19 on your current installation, and if so, did you maybe add OpenMPT 1.19 to Windows' DEP exceptions?

It doesn't create a crash dump.
And I did a fresh install on my test system today - first with 22, then switching back to 19, then 20 and back to 19. It always worked with 19. No adding to any exceptions.

Forget about the memory dump. I tried running the demo with a debugger present, but I can't even get to handle the crash here. It would seem like the plugin author engaged some dirty anti-cracking (and thus, anti-debugging) techniques here.

I got a quick reply from the plugin author, apparently there's no copy protection causing this behaviour, but the plugin is still crashing very badly. Anyway, I got good news: I found why it's crashing and while you can eagerly wait for an updated plugin version (since it's clearly the plugin's fault that it's crashing), here's a quick fix for OpenMPT that should make the plugin work again.
