Description

Obviously this is becoming more and more relevant because fewer and fewer plugins are released with a VST2 version.

Official implementations:

  • vst3_public_sdk is 3-clause BSD, which is great for us
  • vst3sdk is GPL-licensed or proprietary licenses that requires signing a contract. Sadly, this is the more important of the two parts of the SDK.

Third-party re-implementations:

  • Travesty, part of DPF - ISC license (great for us). Not sure how suitable it is because it might focus on being used for plugins instead of hosts?
  • JUCE (GPL / commercial)

As 0001551 was implemented, VST3 plugins can now be used through the vst3shell plugin by polac. Better than nothing...

In a completely unpredicted move, Steinberg relicenses the VST3 SDK under the MIT license: https://forums.steinberg.net/t/vst-3-8-0-sdk-released/1011988
