Summary0000668: Request: 7-Zip support
Description

I noticed that OpenMPT can open ZIP and RAR archives, but it can't open 7z archives. Could this be added in the not-to-distant future?

Additional Information

If the code for 7-Zip's deflater is available under an open source license, then having an option to compress modules into 7z archives upon export would also be useful, though not mandatory.

Okay, very distant future? There are a lot of programs that are able to open 7-Zip, so I am pretty sure that with a little bit of work, somebody on the dev team could integrate the ability to open 7z archives that contain modules.

Where do you see that big dev team? In case you are not aware, the dev team are currently manx and me, and I know I don't have plans to implement this, and I'm pretty sure manx is busy with other, more important things as well. We do not have infinite resources to add every little feature you find so important to OpenMPT. In fact, there are way more important features to be implemented. Just look at the list of currently 164 unassigned feature requests and bug reports.

Also, to give you a rationale why there is already support for zip, rar, gz and lha: All of these formats are being or have been used widely on module download sites, so it's very handy if you can just download e.g. a gzipped module from ModLand and being able to directly open it without extracting. On the other hand, I am not aware of any popular module site currently offering its module downloads as 7z files, so this feature would be mostly useless. And now don't tell me that you want to save precious space on your hard disk and thus absolutely must compress all your modules to 7z - because frankly, I'm not interested in this. zip does a good enough job for this use case.

Okay, sorry. If you want, you can just close or delete this ticket.

Seriously though, nobody ever told me that it was just two people working on OpenMPT.

There's no need to close or delete it. I didn't say that it will never be implemented, but the chance that it will happen anytime soon is extremely low. It's a valid request but with a very low priority.
