Summary0001118: New mixer through bus support
Description

Currently, managing volumes easily, like in any other DAW is pretty complicated in OpenMPT.
I circumvented this by using Xlutop Chainer, but as Saga_Musix once said: If you can give a feature request to make this nasty plugin obsolete, please do so.

So here it is. :)

What I'd like to see is the ability to add mixer slots in the effects chain. This effect has the following settings:
volume, label. A new mixer control can control the volume of this effect and show a VU meter too.

So, lets say you have the following plugins in various effect slots:

  • FX1: Synth1 -> FX2
  • FX2: Reverb -> FX3
  • FX3: Mixer -> Out
  • FX4:Drum machine ->FX5
  • FX5:EQ -> FX6
  • FX6: Mixer -> Out

FX3 has its label set to Bass

FX6 has its label set to Drums

You now open the mixer, and you see each mixer slot (2 in this example) ordered from the lowest FX slot to highest with their label. Each slot has a slider and VU meters with clipping indicator.

The last bus in this mixer also has a slider and VU meter which directly controls the global volume.

Each mixer plugin can have its volume parameter be automated too.

If possible, it would be awesome if all plugins in the effects chain can be listed here too and being edited from here. I know there will be instances where multiple mixer instances can have the same synth as source but that would just show the same synth on both mixer tracks.

Example:

  • FX1: synth1 -> FX10
  • FX2: synth1 -> FX10
  • FX3: Synth1 -> FX20
  • FX4: Drums -> FX20
  • FX10: EQ -> FX11
  • FX11: Mixer -> Out
  • FX20: Reverb -> FX21
  • FX21: Mixer -> Out

Mixer1:

  • Synth1
  • Synth1
  • EQ
  • [slider and vu]

Mixer2:

  • Synth1
  • Drums
  • Reverb
  • [slider and vu]

In theory, it could even be allowed to have a mixer slot route to another mixer slot. Not sure why anyone would want that, and I assume it can be prohibited (eg: mixer always goes to out)

Isn't it already planned to make the mixer somehow modular?

To my knowledge, not the mixer system, but the entire effects chain. But this is something for in the far far future, and even that doesn't have a mixer.
